This is an original Japanese poster printed for the release of Doctor Zhivago (ドクトル・ジバゴ), directed by David Lean.

Doctor Zhivago is a 1965 British-Italian epic romantic drama film based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Boris Pasternak. Directed by David Lean and produced by Carlo Ponti, the film stars Omar Sharif in the title role, alongside Julie Christie, Geraldine Chaplin, Rod Steiger, and Alec Guinness. Set during the final years of Imperial Russia, the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the Russian Civil War, it tells the story of Yuri Zhivago, a physician and poet, and his tragic love for Lara Antipova amidst the upheavals of early 20th-century Russia.

Upon its release, Doctor Zhivago was both a critical and commercial success, winning five Academy Awards, including Best Original Score for Maurice Jarre’s now-iconic “Lara’s Theme.” It remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time (adjusted for inflation) and is celebrated for its sweeping cinematography, grand scale, and emotional storytelling.

The Japanese B2 poster design features a striking composition: a large portrait of Julie Christie’s Lara dominates the left side, set against snowy Russian landscapes. Below and around her are scenes from the film, including Omar Sharif as Yuri Zhivago, romantic and dramatic moments between the characters, and sweeping cavalry charges — all framed by the architecture of Moscow and the frozen steppes. Japanese text highlights the film’s epic scale and romantic themes.
