"Gamera: Super Monster" (宇宙怪獣ガメラ), Original Japanese Theatrical Poster, 1979
Daiei / New Daiei Film

This is the original B2-size Japanese theatrical release poster for Gamera: Super Monster (宇宙怪獣ガメラ), the 1980 swan song of Daiei’s beloved Showa-era kaiju franchise. Known for its audacious use of stock footage from earlier Gamera films, the movie reintroduced the iconic flying turtle to a new generation of fans while paying homage to his legacy.

The poster features a bold cosmic design, with Gamera mid-flight in space, jet boosters roaring, as he confronts a massive spaceship. Below him, the film’s caped female protagonists soar toward battle—an unmistakable echo of the sci-fi superhero genre that was gripping Japan at the time. The visual language is pure tokusatsu spectacle, complete with miniature effects and space opera flair.

Notably, the design leans into Star Wars visual influences—most prominently seen in the angular battleship, reminiscent of a Star Destroyer—underscoring Daiei’s attempt to modernize the kaiju formula for the 1980s while competing with Hollywood blockbusters.

This was the final Gamera film of the original series, released nearly a decade after the previous entry (Gamera vs. Zigra, 1971), making it a nostalgic curtain call for the Showa-era creature. As such, this poster marks a unique transitional point in Japanese monster cinema history—both a farewell and a time capsule of cinematic trends of the period.
