“Malcolm X” / 「マルコムX」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1993, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA954
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of Malcolm X / 「マルコムX」, Spike Lee’s monumental biographical drama starring Denzel Washington in one of the defining performances of his career.
A powerful and highly displayable Japanese release poster, this design presents the film with great visual authority: a vast close-up portrait, bold awards-season copy, and the enormous white “X” anchoring the right side of the composition.
Film background
Originally released in 1992, Malcolm X chronicles the life of the influential African-American activist, from his early years and imprisonment to his conversion to Islam, rise within the Nation of Islam, ideological transformation, and assassination in 1965.
Directed and co-written by Spike Lee, and based on The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley, the film is widely regarded as one of the major American biographical films of the late 20th century. The cast includes Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, Albert Hall, Al Freeman Jr., and Delroy Lindo.
Washington’s performance received immense acclaim and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The film was also nominated for Best Costume Design, and has since been recognised as a landmark work of American cinema.
Poster design
The Japanese poster uses a stark, commanding black background. The left side is dominated by a massive close-up of Denzel Washington as Malcolm X, wearing the character’s iconic browline glasses. The image is cropped tightly, creating an immediate sense of scale and gravity.
Across the top, the large white headline reads:
「アメリカが感動した!」
“America was moved!”
A strong vertical red text block promotes the film as a major Academy Award contender:
「本年度アカデミー賞最有力候補作品!」
“This year’s leading Academy Award contender!”
The right side includes a column of film stills showing key moments from the drama, including public address scenes, intimate personal moments, and large-scale gatherings. These images balance the monumental central portrait with narrative detail.
The lower right is anchored by the huge white “X”, while the Japanese title 「マルコム」 appears beside it, with Denzel Washington’s name printed above in katakana. The result is a bold, serious, and highly effective Japanese campaign design for one of Spike Lee’s most important films.
