“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, Studio Ghibli, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA270
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the first release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Hayao Miyazaki’s landmark science-fiction epic—an era-defining work that directly paved the way for the founding of Studio Ghibli and remains one of the most influential animated films ever made. Set in a post-apocalyptic world engulfed by the toxic “Sea of Decay,” the story follows Nausicaä—princess, pilot, and pacifist—caught between warring kingdoms and the terrifying, insect-like Ohmu, as she fights to understand (and heal) a dying planet.
Poster design
This iconic illustrated composition is among the most instantly recognisable images in Japanese animation: NAUSICAA in towering Roman type across the top; Nausicaä framed in a beam of light; and a dramatic ensemble of key characters in the foreground—anchored by the imposing presence of the Ohmu behind them, its glowing eyes radiating both threat and awe. The warm orange and crimson palette against the deep violet ground gives the poster extraordinary impact on the wall—pure 1980s anime mythmaking, printed at cinema scale.
