“Night People” (夜の人々), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1954, Gregory Peck, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O862

Sale price $175.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese cinema release of Nunnally Johnson’s Night People (夜の人々), starring Gregory Peck. The film was produced in 1954 and opened theatrically in Japan in July 1954, distributed domestically by the 20th Century-Fox Far East company.

Set in divided post-war Berlin, Night People is a Cold War espionage thriller in which an American serviceman is kidnapped in the Soviet sector, forcing U.S. Army officer Colonel Steve Van Dyke, played by Gregory Peck, into an increasingly complex intelligence operation involving political pressure, spies and prisoner exchanges. The film was Nunnally Johnson’s directorial debut, and also stars Broderick Crawford, Anita Björk, Rita Gam, Walter Abel and Buddy Ebsen.

Poster design
A superb and exceptionally striking 1950s Japanese CinemaScope design, dominated by a large hand-rendered portrait of Gregory Peck in U.S. Army uniform against an almost completely black background. The enormous red CINEMASCOPE lettering across the top immediately promotes the film’s technological novelty, while the poster also advertises its multi-channel stereophonic presentation—an important selling point during the early years of widescreen cinema. Night People was photographed in CinemaScope, with its original presentation using the new widescreen format and stereophonic sound.

The dramatic white Japanese copy across the upper section announces the film’s Cold War setting and espionage plot in Berlin, while the huge jagged yellow title 夜の人々 cuts dramatically through the black field. Smaller painted vignettes below Peck show both romantic intrigue and violent abduction, giving the design the atmosphere of a classic mid-century spy thriller.

The combination of deep black negative space, vivid red CinemaScope branding, brilliant yellow calligraphic typography and Gregory Peck’s monumental portrait makes this a particularly powerful example of first-release Japanese Hollywood advertising from the 1950s.

It is over 72 years old!

Condition
Excellent+. A remarkably well-preserved example for an original Japanese theatrical poster from 1954. The deep black field remains exceptionally strong, while the red, yellow and green printing retains superb saturation. The margins and central artwork present beautifully, with only very minor age-related handling consistent with a poster of this vintage. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale.
