“Peking Express” (北京超特急), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1954, STB Tatekan Size (approx. 51 × 146 cm) ZA1242

Sale price $216.00

This is an original Japanese STB tatekan poster for the 1954 first Japanese release of Peking Express. Comprising two sheets arranged vertically, this striking format gives the film’s dramatic imagery and bold Japanese lettering exceptional presence.

Directed by William Dieterle and produced by Hal B. Wallis, the film stars Joseph Cotten, Corinne Calvet, Edmund Gwenn and Marvin Miller. Originally released in America in 1951, it reworks Shanghai Express into a suspenseful adventure set against the political tensions of postwar China. An American doctor travelling from Shanghai to Peking encounters a former lover before an armed attack transforms the journey into a struggle for survival. Romance, intrigue and railway action combine with cinematography by Charles Lang and music by Dimitri Tiomkin.

The poster makes full use of its elongated proportions. Large colour-tinted portraits dominate the upper sheet: the doctor holds a pistol at the left, while Calvet’s character appears alongside him in rich burgundy, her red lipstick echoed by the enormous Japanese title. 「北京超特急」 descends through both panels in vivid red brush lettering with a pale outline. The smaller yellow English title, accented with speed lines, reinforces the railway theme.

Below, a monochrome scene beside a railway carriage leads into a second dramatic image of the central couple, with the doctor gripping a drum-magazine submachine gun. A panoramic railway action scene stretches across the foot of the poster. Muted greens, smoky greys and warm portrait tones provide an atmospheric setting for the brilliant red typography—a compelling example of 1950s Japanese film advertising.

Excellent condition overall, especially considering its age and large two-sheet format. Light handling creases, minor edge wear and age toning are visible, particularly on the reverse. The principal imagery remains clean and the colours retain strong impact. Once framed, this poster will display excellently.
