“Piranha” (ピラニア), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1978, Japanese First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O149

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1978 for the first domestic theatrical release of Piranha (ピラニア), directed by Joe Dante and produced by Roger Corman’s New World Pictures, with Japanese distribution by United Artists. First-issue Japanese posters for late-’70s creature features—especially cult titles launched by Corman’s stable—are highly collectible.

Film background
When two hikers disappear at a shuttered military test site, a boozy investigator and a skip-tracer accidentally unleash a school of genetically altered piranha into the local river system. The fish sweep toward a summer resort and children’s camp, setting off a darkly comic, fast-cutting thriller headlined by Bradford Dillman, Heather Menzies, Kevin McCarthy, Keenan Wynn, and Barbara Steele. The film became a drive-in hit and a calling card for Dante’s effects-driven, satirical style.

Poster design
A sensational country sheet: a screaming swimmer bursts from the water while a swarm of razor-toothed piranha surge upward from the deep, the largest lunging open-jawed beneath her. The sea-blue field grades to inky black at the base, where the slashed scarlet logotype 「ピラニア」 detonates across the width, paired with the small English title. United Artists crediting and the Eirin mark run along the footer—classic hallmarks of an authentic first-release sheet with explosive wall presence.
