This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1982 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Queen Millennia (1000年女王), the feature‑length adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto’s manga and TV series about a mysterious guardian from the planet La‑Metal. The film was produced by Toei Doga and released by Toei across Japan on March 13, 1982.
Film background
Set in a speculative 1999, the story follows junior astronomer Hajime Amamori as he discovers that the wandering planet La‑Metal is on a collision course with Earth. At the centre of the mystery is Yayoi Yukino, a seemingly ordinary woman who is secretly the latest in a line of “Queen Millennia” figures sent from La‑Metal to observe—and perhaps sacrifice—Earth. Mixing mythic destiny with science‑fiction disaster, the film weaves together Matsumoto’s signature melancholy space opera sensibility, thematic threads familiar from Galaxy Express 999, and an entirely original feature script separate from the TV series.
Poster design
The poster is an elegant, almost abstract piece of Leiji‑style iconography. At the top, the serene face of the Queen rises from concentric ripples of water, framed by an organic red crown; her enormous eyes and pale hair echo the design of Matsumoto heroines like Maetel. Mirrored below, an inverted full‑figure image shows the Queen with arms crossed over her chest, floating above a fantastical crystalline city, as if we’re seeing her reflection in some cosmic lake. At the centre of the sheet, the ornate English logo “Queen Millennia” appears reversed between the two halves, creating a symmetrical, dreamlike composition. The cool palette of turquoise, teal and pale gold makes this one of the most memorable 1980s anime posters.
