Sale price $125.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1986 for the first Japanese release of Rocky IV (ロッキー4 炎の友情), the iconic boxing drama written, directed by, and starring Sylvester Stallone.

A defining 1980s blockbuster, Rocky IV remains one of the most famous entries in the Rocky series, remembered for its intense Cold War atmosphere, the tragic death of Apollo Creed, and Rocky Balboa’s climactic confrontation with Ivan Drago. The Japanese campaign presents the film not as pure spectacle, but as a solemn story of grief, loyalty, and personal resolve.

Film background
Released in Japan in 1986, Rocky IV follows Rocky Balboa after the death of his friend and former rival Apollo Creed during an exhibition fight against the Soviet boxer Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren. Rocky’s decision to face Drago becomes both a personal act of mourning and a test of endurance, conviction, and friendship.

The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Carl Weathers, Brigitte Nielsen, and Dolph Lundgren, and has become one of the most enduring popular-cinema symbols of the 1980s.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 uses a powerful, stripped-down composition that places the emotional weight of the film at the centre.

Against a deep black background, Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa is shown alone, bare-chested and dramatically lit, wrapping his hands with white boxing bandages. His lowered gaze and tense posture give the image a sombre, ritualistic quality, as if the fight ahead is not simply athletic, but deeply personal.

The top billing reads:

シルベスター・スタローン
“Sylvester Stallone”

The red vertical copy at right reads:

「いま、ロッキーの心の傷が炎と燃える!」
“Now, the wound in Rocky’s heart burns like fire!”

The left-side copy refers directly to Apollo Creed:

「友よ、君のために闘う。熱い祈りをこめて巻く誓いのバンテージ。」
“My friend, I fight for you. The bandages of my vow are wrapped with a fervent prayer.”

The main title ロッキー4 is printed in bold white lettering across the lower section, with the Japanese subtitle 炎の友情 beneath it — literally “Friendship of Flame.” The bottom credit block includes the principal cast and production credits, with MGM/UA and UIP distribution markings.

This is a particularly strong Japanese design because it avoids busy montage and instead focuses on Rocky’s grief, preparation, and inner fire.

The Japanese subtitle 炎の友情 gives the piece a distinctive local identity, while the stark black design and emotionally charged copy make it one of the more dramatic international presentations of the film.
