"TADANORI YOKOO – Issey Miyake", Japanese Contemporary Art / Fashion Poster, Original Offset 1995, Ultra Rare, B1 Size (c.73 × 103 cm)

Sale price $1,650.00

This is an original Japanese offset poster printed in 1995 for a collaboration between legendary graphic artist Tadanori Yokoo and fashion designer Issey Miyake. Created at the height of Miyake’s global influence and Yokoo’s mature digital‑psychedelic period, the design promoted Miyake’s avant‑garde clothing with a visual language as bold as the garments themselves. Posters from this series were produced in small numbers for fashion and design promotion and are rarely seen today, especially in the large B1 format.

Tadanori Yokoo – Issey Miyake (1995)

Yokoo’s composition pulls the viewer into a hypnotic vortex: concentric rings of colour pulse from the centre, each band stamped with the repeated name “ISSEY MIYAKE,” like a spinning logo‑mandala. Around and between these rings, runway models in Miyake’s sculptural garments float in space, their bodies twisting and tilting as if caught in orbit. The background is a rich field of saturated purples, greens and yellows with tubular, almost liquid forms that recall both 1960s psychedelia and early digital airbrush graphics. Small fish drift through the scene, adding a surreal, dreamlike note typical of Yokoo’s pop‑surrealism. The border glows in a hot red‑orange gradient, and the lower edge credits “ART WORKS BY TADANORI YOKOO,” dating the piece clearly to 1995.

Yokoo’s collaborations with Miyake form an important strand of late‑20th‑century Japanese visual culture. Their posters, invitations and catalogues have been exhibited at institutions such as the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design and other major museums in Japan, which have surveyed the long partnership between the designer and the artist. Yokoo’s graphic work has been included in MoMA exhibitions such as “Word and Image” and “Modern Posters,” and his posters and Miyake’s garments are held by prominent collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and other international design museums.

Japan Poster Shop has acquired a substantial and unique group of original Tadanori Yokoo posters from one of Japan’s most dedicated Yokoo collectors – a person who spent decades tracking down scarce exhibition and commercial pieces, including this Issey Miyake collaboration.

One of Japan’s most famous graphic designers, Yokoo is celebrated for fusing traditional Japanese motifs with Pop art, Surrealism and Western graphic design. His posters and album covers for musicians and theatre troupes, along with his early recognition in international exhibitions at museums such as MoMA and the Victoria & Albert Museum, helped define the visual language of Japanese psychedelia and influenced poster design worldwide.

Rarity and condition

Issey Miyake x Tadanori Yokoo B1 posters from the mid‑1990s were printed in relatively small promotional runs and were often displayed in boutiques or fashion‑industry settings, meaning many surviving examples show heavy handling or sun‑fading. Well‑preserved, unbacked B1 copies like this one are therefore highly desirable to collectors of Yokoo, Miyake, and 1990s fashion graphics.

This particular poster is in excellent, very close to near‑mint condition. Colours are extremely strong, the paper is clean and crisp, and there is only the lightest evidence of handling in the margins consistent with careful storage. Please refer closely to the photos, as they show the exact poster for sale.

It is about 30 years old.

It is not a reproduction or a reprint.

Certificate of Authenticity included.
