We are thrilled to offer one of the most extraordinary Godzilla posters we’ve ever encountered. This is a King Size Japanese Subway Billboard Poster for The Return of Godzilla (1984)—a colossal survivor from a time when movie advertising in Japan aimed to be as fearsome and unforgettable as the monster itself.
This massive format, measuring approximately 120 x 180 cm, was used in subway stations and other major public transit areas in Japan. Posters of this size were extremely limited in number and rarely saved, especially given their impracticality for collectors in space-conscious Japan. Most were discarded after use, and those that do survive almost never appear on the market.
We found this poster tucked away in a storage space in Ikoma-shi, a small city about 45 minutes from Nara. It had never been used—a true time capsule discovery.
Design-wise, this poster is an absolute showstopper. Featuring an enormous, near life-size rendering of Godzilla’s furious face, anchored by the original RED "ゴジラ” logo from the 1954 classic, this piece is pure cinematic power. It captures the darker tone of the 1984 reboot, which served as both a direct sequel to the original 1954 film and a dramatic return to Godzilla’s destructive, nuclear-parable roots.
This poster is in near mint condition, as originally issued to cinemas and transit advertisers. If framed or linen-backed, the fold lines can be smoothed out almost entirely.
It’s difficult to overstate the rarity of this piece. Japanese subway billboard posters are among the most elusive and least preserved formats in the hobby—especially from the 1980s, and even more so for major franchise titles like Godzilla. We have never seen another copy, either in private collections or for sale publicly. The fact that this poster still exists, unused and intact, is astonishing.
We are truly honored to be its temporary caretakers. For now, it’s hanging in our office where it stops everyone in their tracks.
