“Vertigo” (めまい), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O696
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1984 for a theatrical re-release of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (めまい), starring James Stewart and Kim Novak—widely regarded today as one of the greatest films ever made, and the definitive Hitchcock tale of obsession, identity, and psychological vertigo.
Film background
Originally released in 1958, Vertigo follows former detective John “Scottie” Ferguson (James Stewart), whose crippling acrophobia pulls him into a seemingly supernatural case when an old friend asks him to shadow his wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak). What begins as surveillance becomes fixation—then spirals into tragedy, manipulation, and one of cinema’s most haunting meditations on desire and control. Set against San Francisco’s steep streets, fog, and bay-front landmarks, the film’s blend of romance and dread has only grown in stature over the decades.
Poster design
This 1984 Japanese re-release sheet is a striking “festival” style design: a flat neon-green field dominated by Hitchcock’s shadowed profile silhouette and bold English titling THE HITCHCOCK FESTIVAL / VERTIGO, anchoring the piece with graphic-modern severity. Below, a vivid montage panel introduces the film’s key imagery—San Francisco at dusk (the Golden Gate Bridge), Stewart behind the wheel, and Novak’s icy blonde presence—while the Japanese title めまい slashes across the bottom in dramatic red. It’s a brilliant contrast of minimalism and classic star-photography, and a very “Japan” take on Hitchcock’s cool, obsessive mood.
