This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese cinema release of Jean-Luc Godard’s Bande à part (released in Japan as はなればなれに). The film was first released theatrically in Japan on 3 February 2001, decades after its original 1964 production.

Directed by Jean-Luc Godard and starring Anna Karina, Sami Frey, and Claude Brasseur, this is one of Godard’s most beloved early works—an offbeat Nouvelle Vague crime-romance built around youthful impulsiveness, pop-culture cool, and formal play. It’s famous for the trio’s spontaneous “Madison” dance sequence and the exhilarating Louvre run—moments that have become enduring icons of 1960s cinema.

Poster design
A beautifully minimalist, cinema-first Japanese design: a grainy black-and-white still anchors the top, with a crisp typographic block of French credits and Japanese text beneath, and the bold Japanese title はなればなれに dominating the lower field alongside BANDE À PART / JEAN-LUC GODARD. The copy on this design also emphasises the film’s long-awaited arrival in Japan (日本初公開), underscoring its “discovered” status for Japanese audiences.

It is over 25 years old!
