“Ivan the Terrible” (イワン雷帝), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1964 (Parts I & II), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P12

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1964 for the Japanese re-release of Sergei Eisenstein’s towering historical epic Ivan the Terrible (イワン雷帝), presented as Part I / Part II (with Part II noted on the poster as 部分カラー / “partially in colour”). Issued in Japan by Tōwa (東和) (as shown by the TOWA logo and 東和提供 credit on the sheet).

A landmark of world cinema, Eisenstein’s Ivan the Terrible is one of the most visually influential historical films ever made—an operatic portrait of power, paranoia, and statecraft, famed for its bold composition, theatrical lighting, and psychological intensity. This Japanese re-release positions it explicitly as a canonical masterpiece, with copy praising it as an immortal peak in film history.

Poster design
A stunning, austere Japanese design dominated by Ivan’s piercing blue-toned portrait emerging from darkness, with a vertical column of gold copy and stark, symbolic motifs (including ceremonial candlesticks). The lower portion anchors the composition with a small scene still and the monumental title イワン雷帝 in bold cream typography. Minimal, dramatic, and exceptionally frameable—this is a true gallery piece for collectors of Eisenstein and classic world cinema.

It is over 61 years old!
