This is an original Japanese B2 movie poster printed in 1960 for the first Japanese release of Yasujirō Ozu’s Late Autumn (秋日和), released by Shochiku. The film is directed by Yasujirō Ozu, with a screenplay by Kōgo Noda and Yasujirō Ozu, and features an ensemble including Setsuko Hara, Yōko Tsukasa, and Mariko Okada.
Film background
Released in 1960, Late Autumn is one of Ozu’s essential late-period colour works—an exquisitely balanced drama of family expectation, social obligation, and the quiet negotiations of marriage and independence in post-war Japan. Often discussed as a thematic companion to Ozu’s earlier domestic masterpieces, the film refines his signature restraint into something gently humorous, deeply humane, and emotionally precise.
Poster design
A beautiful full-colour Shochiku design, this B2 sheet combines period artwork with elegant studio prestige typography. The composition is anchored by a serene tatami-room tableau of the principal women, while the title 「秋日和」 appears in bold, brush-stroke red calligraphy, giving the poster its striking visual punctuation. The sheet is further distinguished by classic studio presentation details: the Shochiku branding, the delicate lower botanical motif, and the colour-process credit prominently noted on the design (including 総天然色 / “total natural colour” and Agfacolor as printed).
