Released in 1964, Onibaba is one of the defining works of Japanese horror—a ferocious, sensual folktale set amid the chaos of civil war. Two women survive by murdering lost samurai and selling their armour, until jealousy, desire, and superstition poison their fragile existence. Shindō’s film is celebrated for its raw physicality, its modernist intensity, and its unforgettable use of landscape—wind, reeds, mud, and darkness turned into pure dread.
