“The Red Tent” (SOS-北極/赤いテント), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1970, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O783
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed around 1970 for the Japanese release of The Red Tent (SOS-北極/赤いテント), an international Soviet Union / Italy co-production directed by Mikhail Kalatozov, starring Sean Connery, Claudia Cardinale, Peter Finch, and Hardy Krüger.
Film background
First released internationally in 1969, The Red Tent dramatizes the real-life 1928 disaster of Umberto Nobile’s airship expedition and the desperate rescue effort in the Arctic. Framed as a moral reckoning as well as a survival epic, the film blends large-scale spectacle (ice, aircraft, and expedition logistics) with psychological tension and guilt. With Kalatozov’s operatic sensibility and an ensemble cast of major international stars, it stands as one of the era’s most ambitious “true story” polar adventure films.
Poster design
A superb, design-forward Japanese B2 that feels like a cinematic map of catastrophe. The upper field layers a stylised Arctic polar chart beneath a golden airship, while two haunting, screen-printed portrait faces loom across the sky—suggesting memory and judgement. The lower half opens into a vast wall of ice with three tiny figures crossing the frozen expanse, underscoring the scale and isolation of the rescue. The title treatment is unforgettable: 「SOS-北極」 above the huge brush-red 「赤いテント」, the calligraphy cutting across the ice like a distress flare. A row of cast portraits along the bottom completes the prestige presentation. Minimal, icy, and exceptionally displayable.
