“Wuthering Heights” (嵐が丘), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster c. 1965–1966, STB Tatekan Size (approx. 51 × 146 cm) ZA1240

Sale price $157.00

This is an original Japanese STB tatekan theatrical poster for the mid-1960s Towa re-release of William Wyler’s celebrated 1939 adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Starring Laurence Olivier, Merle Oberon and David Niven, this exceptionally elegant design combines romantic photography with sweeping Japanese calligraphy across two vertically arranged sheets.

Film background
Adapted from Emily Brontë’s novel, the film follows the destructive, enduring attachment between Heathcliff and Catherine against the Yorkshire moors. Childhood companionship gives way to class divisions, jealousy and revenge, creating one of classic Hollywood’s most memorable portrayals of obsessive love.

Produced by Samuel Goldwyn, the film features a screenplay by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, music by Alfred Newman, and Gregg Toland’s Academy Award-winning black-and-white cinematography. Olivier’s Heathcliff and Oberon’s Catherine remain central to its lasting appeal.

Poster design
The composition makes exceptional use of the tatekan’s height. Large, rose-tinted portraits of Olivier and Oberon fill the upper section, while enormous magenta brush lettering spelling 「嵐が丘」 descends through almost the entire design.

Pale blue English script provides a delicate counterpoint to the forceful Japanese title. Below the portraits, a dramatic image shows Heathcliff carrying Catherine in a flowing white dress. Smaller scenes of figures among the rocks and the young lovers on the moors extend the narrative into the lower sheet.

Soft cream, muted green and mauve tones give the montage a dreamlike atmosphere. The green Japanese copy promises “the intensity of a love that burns beyond death”, presenting Brontë’s story as an immortal literary masterpiece brought to the screen. The Towa distributor mark anchors the bottom edge.

Condition
Excellent overall, especially considering its age and two-sheet format. The magenta lettering remains vivid, and the imagery retains a beautiful overall presentation.

Once framed, this poster will display excellently.
