Explore Japan Poster Shop’s extensive collection of original Japanese movie posters from the 1960s (1960–1969), featuring rare and historically significant theatrical artwork from one of the most innovative decades in cinema and graphic design.
The 1960s marked a remarkable period of artistic experimentation, cultural transformation and international filmmaking. In Japan, the decade witnessed the continued achievements of established masters alongside the emergence of a new generation of radical filmmakers, while Japanese theatrical poster design increasingly embraced bold modernist compositions, striking photography, expressive illustration and experimental typography.
Our collection encompasses original Japanese theatrical posters for celebrated works by legendary Japanese filmmakers including Akira Kurosawa, Yasujirō Ozu, Masaki Kobayashi, Kaneto Shindō, Nagisa Ōshima, Shōhei Imamura and Seijun Suzuki, whose films helped define the artistic identity of postwar Japanese cinema.
The decade also witnessed the international influence of the French New Wave, Italian cinema and European art-house filmmaking, with directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman and Luis Buñuel producing some of the most influential films of the twentieth century. Japanese theatrical posters for these productions frequently feature distinctive artwork created specifically for their release in Japan.
Our holdings also include original Japanese posters for major Hollywood productions, classic Westerns, science fiction, horror, international thrillers and celebrated films such as Psycho (1960), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Dr. No (1962), Goldfinger (1964), Blow-Up (1966), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and numerous other landmarks of the decade.
Of particular significance are our rare first-release Japanese theatrical posters, including original B2 and B1 formats, exceptionally scarce STB Tatekan posters, large-format advertising material, advance promotional designs and unusual theatrical variants. Many surviving examples are now more than sixty years old, with early releases and exceptional-condition copies becoming increasingly difficult to acquire.
These original posters represent an important intersection of Japanese graphic design, international film history and the cultural movements of the 1960s, offering collectors a distinctive perspective on one of cinema’s most influential decades.
Every poster offered by Japan Poster Shop is an authentic original, carefully sourced in Japan and individually catalogued. We do not sell reproductions. All posters are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, with worldwide DHL Express shipping available from our gallery in Tokyo.
