“Five Easy Pieces” (ファイブ・イージー・ピーセス), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1970, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O759

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 movie poster printed in 1970 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Five Easy Pieces (ファイブ・イージー・ピーセス), a United States drama directed by Bob Rafelson, starring Jack Nicholson, with Karen Black and Susan Anspach.

Film background
Released in 1970, Five Easy Pieces is a defining work of New Hollywood—an abrasive, intimate character study of Bobby Dupea, a drifting oil-rig worker with a buried past as a trained pianist. As he moves between working-class reality and an upper-class family world he can’t fully return to, the film becomes a portrait of American restlessness and self-sabotage. Nicholson’s performance helped cement his status as a generational star, and the film remains one of the era’s key counterculture dramas.

Poster design
A superb example of early-’70s Japanese modernist restraint: a gritty, yellow-toned halftone image of Nicholson sits inside a bold red frame, set against a clean white field. The typography is crisp and graphic—large black katakana title 「ファイブ・イージー・ピーセス」 across the lower half, with credits and festival laurels arranged like a minimalist layout grid. At the top, the Japanese tagline reads 「いい生活なんて吐き気がするだけだ!」 (“A good life just makes me sick!”), perfectly matching the film’s alienated tone. Elegant, design-forward, and extremely displayable.
