“Dragon Ball” (ドラゴンボール), Ultra-Rare Original Japanese Shueisha / Jump Comics ’86 Summer Promotional Poster, Vols. 1–3, c. 51 × 18 cm P179

Sale price $1,150.00

This is an original Japanese Shueisha / Jump Comics promotional poster from the publisher’s ’86 Summer comics campaign, issued to promote Dragon Ball Vols. 1–3 by Akira Toriyama. The sheet itself reads 「’86夏 集英社のコミックス」, 「DRAGON BALL ①~③巻」, and carries the line promoting the TV anime as then airing on Fuji TV every Wednesday at 7:00 PM. Official Shueisha records date Vol. 1 to September 10, 1985, Vol. 2 to January 10, 1986, and Vol. 3 to June 10, 1986, placing this poster squarely in the earliest collected-volume era of Dragon Ball, right as the first three books were on shelves together.

Dragon Ball first began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1984. Official Dragon Ball retrospectives note that by 1986 the series’ momentum was already huge: the manga’s popularity intensified, the TV anime adaptation was announced that year, and Goku even appeared on a 4.2-million-copy special issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. Toei states that the TV anime began broadcasting on February 26, 1986, which fits perfectly with the poster’s printed line advertising the show as currently airing.

Four decades later, Dragon Ball remains one of manga and anime’s defining global franchises. Toei has said the manga has sold 260 million copies worldwide and counting, while the official Dragon Ball site says the series is enjoyed by many millions of fans around the world. Its 40th anniversary has been marked by an official 42-volume anniversary box set and the opening of DRAGON BALL STORE TOKYO, the first official Dragon Ball store.

Poster design
A superb early Son Goku image in classic Toriyama style: Goku crouched in his orange gi against a vivid yellow field, with a bold blue title panel below carrying the oversized DRAGON BALL logo in yellow. The lower text anchors the poster to a very specific historical moment: Shueisha’s ’86 Summer comics campaign, Jump Comics, Vols. 1–3, 360 yen each, and the concurrent Fuji TV anime broadcast.

Why this piece matters
This is a very early Dragon Ball paper item, tied directly to the first three Japanese tankōbon volumes and the franchise’s original 1986 anime boom. It captures the moment when Dragon Ball was evolving from a breakout manga into a full multimedia phenomenon. Surviving long-format retail promos from this early period are vastly harder to find than later anime and movie posters.

Condition
Excellent overall, especially for a fragile 1986 promotional paper item. The poster shows a visible horizontal fold line / fold impression across the middle, plus light natural waviness and minor surface impressions from age and storage. The verso is clean, the colours remain strong and vivid, and there are no major tears or heavy stains visible. Excellent and exceptionally well-preserved.
