Sale price $325.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1989 for the release of Godzilla vs. Biollante (ゴジラvsビオランテ). Starring Kunihiko Mitamura, Megumi Odaka, and Yasuko Sawaguchi, this film is the crucial early chapter of the Heisei-era cycle—and one of the most distinctive entries in the franchise due to its biotech-horror premise and extraordinary poster art.

The film follows the aftermath of The Return of Godzilla (1984), as Godzilla is drawn back into conflict amid escalating Cold War tension and the emergence of a new, unnatural threat: Biollante, a monstrous plant organism born from genetic experiments involving Godzilla cells and human DNA. The result is a uniquely “late-’80s” Godzilla film—equal parts kaiju spectacle and science-fiction paranoia—with some of the era’s most memorable creature designs.

Toho commissioned legendary illustrator Noriyoshi Ohrai—celebrated for his dramatic, painterly campaign art—to create the key visual. Ohrai’s composition here is vivid and nightmarish: Godzilla rises from a turbulent, toxic sea, framed against a surreal, bio-organic eruption—a gigantic crimson, carnivorous bloom with a demonic “mouth” at its core—while smaller mutated forms pulse around the background like an infection. The scale is reinforced by wreckage at the waterline, making the central confrontation feel cataclysmic. The bold magenta title ゴジラvsビオランテ anchors the sheet, while the vertical release strip 「12月16日上陸!」 gives the design its original theatrical urgency.

Collectors note that printed examples of Ohrai’s work can appear slightly darker than the original paintings—a period printing characteristic that suits the film’s eerie, apocalyptic tone and enhances the depth of the greens, reds, and shadowy textures.
