“Hell Night” / ヘルナイト (1981) – ORIGINAL JAPANESE B2 THEATRICAL POSTER – LINDA BLAIR – B2 SIZE (51 × 73 cm) A294

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1981 for the first Japanese release of Hell Night, the cult American slasher film directed by Tom DeSimone and starring Linda Blair, Vincent Van Patten, Peter Barton, Kevin Brophy, and Jenny Neuman.

Released at the height of the early-1980s slasher cycle, Hell Night has become a sought-after cult horror title, remembered for its atmospheric old-dark-house setting, fraternity initiation premise, and Linda Blair’s post-Exorcist presence. The Japanese campaign is especially striking, transforming the film into a sleek, elegant, and highly graphic piece of horror advertising.

Film background
Set during a hazing ritual at a decaying mansion once home to a notorious family, Hell Night follows a group of college pledges forced to spend the night inside the forbidding estate. As darkness falls, the initiation turns into a fight for survival.

Although often grouped with the broader American slasher movement, the film is distinguished by its unusually gothic atmosphere and restrained visual style. Rather than relying purely on gore, it builds tension through architecture, darkness, suggestion, and the uncanny presence of the house itself.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 is an exceptionally strong horror design and one of the most visually refined posters for the film.

Set against a deep midnight-blue ground, the composition is dominated by two haunting motifs: an inverted close-up of a terrified young woman’s face in the upper right, and a blood-streaked hand dangling an ornate key from above. The key hangs vertically through the center of the composition, visually linking the image to the title and reinforcing the film’s central mystery.

The green vertical teaser reads:

「自信のある方にしか お見せできません。」
“We can only show this to those who have confidence [in their own courage].”

The title ヘルナイト is rendered across the lower section in a bold, jagged blood-red design, with the original English title HELL NIGHT subtly incorporated into the typography. At lower left, the Japanese copy intensifies the theatrical appeal with lines including:

「その鍵を手に入れるまで誰も生きては帰れない!」
“Until that key is obtained, no one gets out alive!”

「見るというより体験する映画!」
“A film you experience rather than simply watch!”

A small inset still at the bottom center, showing a woman moving cautiously near iron gates and a parked car, adds a final narrative touch and deepens the sense of menace.

Overall, the design is minimal, sinister, and unusually elegant for an early-1980s slasher campaign—far more stylish than many of its Western counterparts.
