“Seven Samurai” (七人の侍), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1991, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) D96

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1991 for a Japanese theatrical release of Akira Kurosawa’s immortal masterpiece Seven Samurai (七人の侍, 1954). Few films have shaped world cinema more profoundly: its blend of character, rhythm, action choreography, and moral gravity became the blueprint for everything from modern ensemble action films to the DNA of the western and the blockbuster.

Film background
Seven Samurai remains Kurosawa’s most celebrated work—an epic of desperate farmers hiring seven masterless samurai to defend their village from bandits. It is both intimate and monumental: strategy, sacrifice, and human frailty played out against rain, mud, steel, and ideology. The film’s influence is immeasurable (from The Magnificent Seven to countless modern action ensembles), and in Japan it has never really left the cultural bloodstream—returning to cinemas repeatedly as a canonical “must-see” theatrical experience.

This 1991 Japanese release poster is particularly appealing because it represents the point where Seven Samurai had fully entered its modern afterlife: no longer simply a historical epic, but a world-class art film presented again for new audiences—decades after its debut, yet still commanding full cinema attention.

Poster design
A striking, minimalist design centred on emotion rather than spectacle. The sheet is dominated by a bold, painterly portrait—helmeted, shouting, and urgent—rendered in warm brush tones that feel closer to fine art illustration than conventional movie advertising. Beneath it, the title 「七人の侍」 is executed in powerful black calligraphy, with 「黒澤明監督作品」 (“A film by Akira Kurosawa”) anchoring the film’s authorship like a seal.
At the bottom, a small band of silhouetted samurai forms a graphic “line of seven,” paired with the English mark SEVEN SAMURAI – COMING BACK, giving the poster a clean international-modern presentation while still feeling unmistakably Japanese in its typography and restraint. On a wall, it reads like a gallery piece.
