“The Silence of the Lambs” (羊たちの沈黙), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1991, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O201
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1991 for the first domestic release of The Silence of the Lambs, distributed in Japan with Orion credits.
Film background
Jonathan Demme’s psychological horror masterwork—adapted by Ted Tally from Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel—follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) as she seeks the insight of incarcerated psychiatrist–cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) to stop skin-collecting killer “Buffalo Bill” (Ted Levine); supporting turns include Scott Glenn, Anthony Heald, and Kasi Lemmons. Released on February 14, 1991, the film earned $272.7M worldwide on a $19M budget, premiered in competition at the 41st Berlin International Film Festival (Demme won the Silver Bear for Best Director), and became only the third film in history—and the only widely regarded horror film—to sweep the “Big Five” Oscars: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay.
Poster design
The iconic key art: a pale, close-cropped face with red-tinted eyes, the mouth replaced by a vivid death’s-head hawkmoth whose back forms a skull. A black-to-white gradient field and the sharp red Japanese logotype 「羊たちの沈黙」 create a stark, instantly recognizable composition.
