Explore Japan Poster Shop’s extensive collection of original Japanese movie posters from the 1990s (1990–1999), featuring rare and highly collectible theatrical artwork from one of the most influential decades in modern cinema, Japanese animation and graphic design.
The 1990s witnessed a remarkable transformation in international filmmaking, with the emergence of groundbreaking visual effects, the global expansion of Japanese anime and a new generation of influential directors. Japanese theatrical poster campaigns from this period are particularly celebrated for their distinctive illustrations, dramatic photographic compositions, bold typography and unique interpretations of international cinema.
Our collection encompasses original Japanese posters for landmark Hollywood productions such as Jurassic Park (1993), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Pulp Fiction (1994), Titanic (1997) and Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), alongside numerous other celebrated films of the decade.
Of particular significance is the extraordinary development of Japanese animation during the 1990s, including the international recognition of Studio Ghibli, the influential work of Hayao Miyazaki, and landmark productions such as Porco Rosso (1992), Princess Mononoke (1997), Ghost in the Shell (1995) and the theatrical Dragon Ball Z films. Original Japanese posters from these releases have become increasingly sought after by collectors for their exceptional artwork and cultural significance.
The decade also produced important works of Japanese live-action cinema, including films by Takeshi Kitano, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Takashi Miike and other influential directors, alongside Japanese horror, crime cinema, independent productions and cult classics.
Our extensive holdings include original Japanese B2 and B1 theatrical posters, rare first-release examples, advance promotional designs, unused posters, limited-distribution variants and exceptionally scarce large-format advertising material. Many original examples from this period are now approaching or exceeding thirty years of age, with rare designs and outstanding-condition copies becoming increasingly difficult to acquire.
These posters represent an important chapter in the history of Japanese cinema, international film advertising and late twentieth-century graphic design, combining historical significance with enduring visual appeal.
Every poster offered by Japan Poster Shop is an authentic original, carefully sourced in Japan and individually catalogued. We do not sell reproductions. All posters are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, with worldwide DHL Express shipping available from our gallery in Tokyo.
