“Monsters, Inc.” (モンスターズ・インク), Original Japanese First Release Movie Poster 2002, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q121
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 2002 for the film’s first Japanese release of Monsters, Inc., the Pixar animated feature directed by Pete Docter, co-directed by Lee Unkrich and David Silverman, and featuring the voices of John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Mary Gibbs, Steve Buscemi, James Coburn, and Jennifer Tilly. Although the film first opened in the United States in 2001, this Japanese poster belongs to the original Japanese cinema campaign, which opened on 2 March 2002.
Film background
Released at the height of Pixar’s early golden period, Monsters, Inc. remains one of the studio’s defining works. Set in the city of Monstropolis, it follows top scarer James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and his fast-talking partner Mike Wazowski, whose professional world is thrown into chaos when a human child unexpectedly crosses into monster territory. Blending high-concept world-building, visual invention, comedy, and genuine emotional warmth, the film quickly established itself as one of the most beloved animated features of its era.
For collectors, original Japanese first-release paper for major Pixar titles has become increasingly desirable, especially for posters from this early period before the studio’s imagery became endlessly reproduced and reformatted.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly appealing Japanese design. The composition is built around the famous bedroom door motif, with Mike in the foreground and Sulley looming above, while a line of additional monsters peer around the door behind them. The image perfectly captures the film’s core idea: the boundary between the monster world and the hidden human world beyond the closet door. The cool blue palette of the room, the glowing wood floor, and the stacked faces emerging from the doorway give the poster strong depth and immediate wall presence.
What makes the design especially effective is its simplicity. Rather than relying on a busy montage, it centres on the film’s most memorable characters and visual concept, which gives it a cleaner and more elegant look than many family-film posters of the period. It is an excellent example of early-2000s Pixar campaign design and a particularly attractive Japanese theatrical issue.
