“Rental Family” (レンタル・ファミリー), Original Japanese Movie Poster 2026, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA1160
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster issued in 2026 for the first Japanese release of Rental Family, directed by HIKARI and starring Brendan Fraser, Taira Gaku, Yamamoto Mari, Emoto Akira, and Gorman Shannon Mahina. The film opened in Japan on 27 February 2026 through Searchlight Pictures Japan.
Film background
Set in Tokyo, the film follows Philip, a struggling American actor who becomes involved with a rental family company, taking on temporary roles in other people’s lives and gradually rediscovering purpose and human connection. Searchlight’s official synopsis presents it as a Japanese-set drama about performance, identity, and belonging, while HIKARI’s comments for the London Film Festival emphasised its inspiration in Japan’s real-life rental-family culture and its broader concern with friendship and emotional connection in modern Tokyo.
The film had its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival in 2025, where TIFF described it as HIKARI’s second feature. It then had its UK premiere as an American Express Gala at the 69th BFI London Film Festival, and its Asian premiere in the Gala Selection at the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival.
Poster design
This is a warm, highly contemporary, and immediately appealing Japanese release design. The poster centres on Brendan Fraser and a young girl amid a bustling festival-like crowd of performers in cat makeup and colourful costume, giving the image a feeling of staged joy layered over emotional ambiguity. That tension suits the film perfectly: a story about people playing roles for others, yet discovering something genuine in the process.
The large handwritten-style yellow Japanese title レンタル・ファミリー stands out beautifully against the crowded photographic background, while the 2025 festival laurels at the top reinforce the film’s international reception before its Japanese release. Unlike more conventional prestige-drama posters, this design feels lively, affectionate, and subtly bittersweet, which makes it especially effective as both an advertisement and a display piece.
