"Wattstax", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1988, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N90
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1988 for the release of Wattstax, the American concert documentary directed by Mel Stuart.
The film documents the 1972 Wattstax music festival held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Watts riots. Often referred to as the “Black Woodstock,” the event was organised by Stax Records and featured a legendary lineup including Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, The Bar-Kays, Albert King, Carla Thomas, and The Dramatics, alongside comedians like Richard Pryor, whose monologues are intercut throughout the film. Blending electrifying musical performances with footage and commentary reflecting on African American identity, pride, and the civil rights movement, Wattstax stands as both a cultural and political milestone in 1970s America.
This Japanese B2-size poster was issued exclusively for the 1988 theatrical re-release in Japan. The striking design features a powerful central image of Isaac Hayes, surrounded by inset performance stills and bold Japanese promotional text, perfectly capturing both the energy of the festival and the social significance of the event.
