“The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (ロード・オブ・ザ・リング/二つの塔), Original Japanese Advance Double-Sided Light-Box Cinema Poster 2003, B1 Size (73 × 103 cm) IA18
This is an original Japanese B1 double-sided theatrical display poster issued for the Japanese release campaign of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the second chapter in Peter Jackson’s landmark adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic. Released in Japan in 2003, the film stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom, John Rhys-Davies, Bernard Hill, Miranda Otto, Christopher Lee, and Andy Serkis.
Unlike the more commonly encountered standard one-sided posters, this example is a double-sided cinema display sheet, produced for use in a backlit light box or illuminated theatre case. Posters of this type were made for in-cinema display and survive in far smaller numbers than ordinary commercial posters, making them especially desirable to collectors.
Film background
Released in 2002 internationally and promoted in Japan for its 2003 theatrical run, The Two Towers expands Tolkien’s world on a far grander scale, following the divided Fellowship as the War of the Ring intensifies. The film is especially celebrated for the introduction of Gollum as a fully realised digital character, the siege of Helm’s Deep, and the darkening tone that bridges the wonder of the first film with the apocalyptic scale of the finale. For many collectors, it remains one of the defining fantasy epics of modern cinema.
Poster design
This is a superb and atmospheric Japanese advance design. Rather than relying on a crowded character montage, the composition is built around an ominous vision of Middle-earth at war: a colossal dark tower dominates the foreground, a second tower rises in the distance, and vast armies gather beneath a storm-laden sky. The restrained palette of black, grey, and burnished gold gives the image a grave, monumental quality, while the large gold Japanese title at the bottom reinforces the sense of scale and destiny.
It is an unusually elegant campaign image for the film—more architectural and mood-driven than many international designs—and it works particularly well in this large B1 format. The double-sided construction also means it was intended to glow when backlit, giving the image a presence ordinary posters do not have.
Condition
Excellent. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale. The poster presents very strongly overall, with rich dark tones, strong gloss, and excellent display appeal. The reverse shows the mirrored back-print expected of a genuine double-sided light-box sheet, and nothing detracts from the overall front presentation.
It is over 23 years old!
It is not a reproduction or a reprint.
