“Waterboys” (ウォーターボーイズ), Original Japanese Movie Poster 2001, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA1091

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2001 for the first theatrical release of Waterboys (ウォーターボーイズ), Shinobu Yaguchi’s breakout青春 comedy about a group of high-school boys who end up forming a synchronised swimming team. The film was produced in 2001, distributed by Toho, and opened in Japan on 15 September 2001.

Film background

Written and directed by Shinobu Yaguchi, Waterboys stars Satoshi Tsumabuki, Hiroshi Tamaki, Akifumi Miura, Kōen Kondō, Takatoshi Kaneko, alongside Naoto Takenaka and others. Inspired by a real boys’ high-school synchronised swimming club, the film follows five reluctant students as they train for a school festival performance, turning an absurd premise into one of the most charming and commercially successful Japanese youth films of its period. It became a major hit and helped elevate the profiles of both Yaguchi and several members of its cast.

Poster design

This is a superb and highly memorable Japanese release design. The poster uses an extreme close-up of a swimmer in goggles bursting through water, creating an image that is instantly comic, energetic, and unmistakably tied to the film’s premise of “male synchro.” The bold white and blue typography across the lower half gives the sheet strong visual impact, while the bright aquatic palette and splash effects make it especially displayable. It is exactly the kind of clean, high-concept design that made Japanese posters for early-2000s hits so effective. From a collector’s perspective, it captures the film at the moment it first entered popular culture, before the later television spin-offs and broader franchise recognition.

Condition

Excellent. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale. The poster presents very strongly overall, with rich colour and excellent display appeal. There is light age-related handling and minor wear consistent with an authentic 2001 theatrical poster, but nothing that detracts from the overall presentation.

It is over 25 years old!

It is not a reproduction or a reprint.

Certificate of Authenticity included.
