“9½ Weeks” / 「ナインハーフ」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1986, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) H295

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2-format theatrical poster issued for the 1986 Japanese release of 9½ Weeks / 「ナインハーフ」, Adrian Lyne’s visually influential erotic drama starring Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger.

Unlike the principal Japanese-language campaign designs, this scarce variant retains the film’s full English international artwork and credit layout, printed in the standard Japanese B2 format.

Film background

Set in New York City, the film follows Elizabeth McGraw, an intelligent and independent art-gallery employee who begins a relationship with the wealthy and enigmatic commodities broker John Gray.

Their initial attraction develops into an increasingly intense series of erotic rituals, psychological tests, and games of control. Although Elizabeth is fascinated by John’s confidence and unpredictability, the relationship gradually begins to erode her emotional independence.

The film was directed by Adrian Lyne, from a screenplay by Patricia Knop, Zalman King, and Sarah Kernochan, based on the book by Elizabeth McNeill.

The principal cast includes:

Mickey Rourke
Kim Basinger
Margaret Whitton
David Margulies
Christine Baranski
Karen Young

The cinematography was by Peter Biziou, with music composed by Jack Nitzsche.

Although its initial American reception was divided, 9½ Weeks became a major international success, particularly in Europe and Japan. Its smoky cinematography, fashion-led styling, New York locations, and celebrated soundtrack established it as one of the defining erotic dramas of the 1980s.

Poster design

The poster is dominated by a dramatic monochrome portrait of Kim Basinger as Elizabeth, seated in a pale silk slip and leaning backwards beneath a narrow shaft of light.

Her face is turned upward and partially obscured by the intense illumination, while the surrounding darkness creates a mood of intimacy, vulnerability, and psychological surrender.

The photograph is treated in soft sepia and grey tones, giving it the appearance of a fine-art fashion image rather than a conventional narrative film poster.

Across the lower-left corner, the title:

“9½ Weeks”

is rendered in sweeping coral-red brush script. Its loose, handwritten form provides the only strong colour within the otherwise restrained composition.

The names:

“MICKEY ROURKE”
“KIM BASINGER”

appear prominently at upper left in clean white lettering.

Rather than using a conventional billing block, the production credits are divided vertically along both sides of Basinger’s figure. These identify the supporting cast and principal filmmakers, including:

Adrian Lyne
Zalman King
Antony Rufus Isaacs
Peter Biziou
Jack Nitzsche

This unusual arrangement frames the central photograph while preserving the elegant minimalism of the design.

The result is a sophisticated and highly atmospheric English-language Japanese B2 poster, with strong crossover appeal to collectors of 1980s cinema, fashion photography, and cult romantic drama.

Condition

Very Good+ condition. The poster retains strong photographic contrast, clean white credits, vivid coral-red title lettering, and very good overall display impact.
