"Back to the Future", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1985, Ultra Rare Horizontal B2 Poster Size (73 × 51 cm) Q173

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese horizontal B2 poster printed in 1985 for the first theatrical release of Back to the Future (バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー), Robert Zemeckis’s landmark time-travel adventure and one of the defining popular films of the 1980s. Original Japanese posters for the film are highly collectible, and this is an especially desirable rare still-based horizontal variant, produced for cinema display rather than as the standard vertical key-art design.

Film background
Released in 1985, Back to the Future was directed by Robert Zemeckis and stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson, and Claudia Wells. Produced by Steven Spielberg, the film follows teenager Marty McFly, who is accidentally sent from 1985 back to 1955 in the DeLorean time machine created by Doc Brown. There, he must repair the disruption he has caused to the past, reunite his future parents, and find a way back to his own time.

Now regarded as one of the most beloved American films of its era, it remains celebrated for its inventive screenplay, pitch-perfect casting, and enduring cultural impact. Its combination of science fiction, comedy, romance, and youthful energy helped establish the film as a true classic and launched one of cinema’s most admired trilogies.

Poster design
This is a superb and highly appealing Japanese release design. Rather than using the familiar illustrated one-sheet artwork, this variant presents a full-bleed photographic still from the unforgettable “Enchantment Under the Sea” sequence, capturing one of the story’s key emotional turning points.

At left, George McFly, played by Crispin Glover, appears in his white prom dinner jacket, extending his hand in a confident, newly self-assured gesture. At centre, Lorraine Baines, played by Lea Thompson, stands in her pink formal dress and white wrap, gazing warmly toward George. At right, Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, returns the handshake, dressed in his borrowed 1955 dance attire with loosened tie and jacket. The image beautifully conveys the moment when Marty realises the timeline has been restored and his parents’ future has been secured.

The lower-left corner carries the bold red Japanese title logo バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー, with the familiar English “BACK TO THE FUTURE” embedded within the arrow motif. Above it appears the credit スティーブン・スピルバーグ製作 (“A Steven Spielberg Production”), while the slim red vertical marker at the far left is printed 1955, anchoring the still within the film’s past timeline.

For collectors, this is exactly the sort of variant that stands apart: a scarce Japanese horizontal cinema-display poster with a completely different visual identity from the standard release artwork, and one that focuses on character and narrative rather than spectacle alone.
