“Belle de Jour” (昼顔), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1967, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P163

Sale price $550.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1967 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Belle de Jour (昼顔), Luis Buñuel’s iconic French–Italian art-house masterpiece starring Catherine Deneuve, with Jean Sorel and Michel Piccoli. Distributed in Japan by Tōwa (東和), it opened in Japan on 30 September 1967.

Film background
Released in 1967, Belle de Jour is a landmark surrealist erotic psychological drama—adapted from the novel by Joseph Kessel and scripted by Buñuel with Jean-Claude Carrière. Deneuve plays Séverine, a young bourgeois wife whose private desires lead her to live a double life as a daytime prostitute—one of the defining roles of 1960s European cinema and a cornerstone of Buñuel’s career.

Poster design
A beautiful, design-forward Japanese campaign sheet that leans into continental glamour rather than exploitation: Deneuve dominates the composition in a soft, dreamlike montage—sunglasses, luminous hair, and multiple vignette stills stacked like fragments of memory. The bold Japanese title 昼顔 anchors the lower section in striking calligraphic type, while the elegant “Belle de Jour” script floats near centre. The copyline framing Buñuel as the “master” and the 昭和42年度 芸術祭参加作品 (“Art Festival selection”) note give the poster a distinctly Japanese art-house positioning—a genuinely frame-worthy B2.
