“Beneath the Planet of the Apes” (続 猿の惑星), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1970, Original Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) K75 A
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1970 for the first Japanese release of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (続 猿の惑星)—the dark, escalating second chapter in the landmark Planet of the Apes series. Following directly from the 1968 classic, the film plunges deeper into the franchise’s blend of dystopian sci-fi, Cold War anxiety, and philosophical unease, pushing the world of the Apes into even stranger—and more unsettling—territory.
The story begins when a new astronaut (played by James Franciscus) arrives searching for Charlton Heston’s missing Taylor, only to uncover a devastated forbidden zone, a hidden underground society, and an apocalyptic secret beneath the ruins of human civilisation. It’s a sequel that famously turns bleak, culminating in one of the most audacious endings of any major studio sci-fi film of its era.
Design
A spectacular, high-drama montage composition that screams early-’70s science-fiction spectacle: an enormous ape face dominates the upper right, balanced by flames, a rocket, ruined architecture, and key character portraits—layered into a kinetic collage of conflict and catastrophe. The bold Japanese title 続 猿の惑星 in massive red-and-black typography explodes across the bottom, giving the sheet huge visual weight and making it a striking wall piece even from across a room. This is classic Japanese campaign design for imported sci-fi: maximal impact, cinematic scale, and superb colour.
