“Blood and Bones” (血と骨), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2004, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q51
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2004 for the first theatrical release of Blood and Bones (血と骨), the powerful period drama directed by Yōichi Sai and starring Beat Takeshi and Kyōka Suzuki. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Yan Sogiru, the film opened in Japan on 6 November 2004 and remains one of the most acclaimed Japanese films of its decade.
Film background
Set across several decades of twentieth-century Japan, Blood and Bones follows Kim Shun-pei, a brutal and domineering Korean immigrant whose violence shapes the lives of his family and those around him. Alongside Beat Takeshi and Kyōka Suzuki, the cast includes Joe Odagiri, Tomoko Tabata, Hirofumi Arai, and Takashi Sasano. The film was widely recognised on release, earning major Japanese awards attention and further cementing Sai’s reputation for hard-edged, socially charged drama.
Poster design
This is a striking and unusually restrained original release design. Rather than using action or montage imagery, the poster relies on the intense juxtaposition of two faces: the severe profile of Beat Takeshi dominates the right side, while Kyōka Suzuki’s calm, frontal portrait occupies the left. The vast scale of the close-ups, the pale background, and the large black title at the bottom give the sheet a grave, almost monumental quality. It is an exceptionally strong country-of-origin design, perfectly suited to the film’s themes of legacy, violence, family, and emotional repression.
