"Calamity of Snakes / 人蛇大戦 蛇”, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster, 1983, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) C261

Sale price $125.00

An original 1983 Japanese B2 theatrical release poster for the notorious Taiwanese horror film Calamity of Snakes, released in Japan under the sensational title 人蛇大戦 蛇 (Jinja Taisen: Hebi / Great Human-Snake War: Snake).

An infamous entry in the international exploitation-horror canon, Calamity of Snakes has long held cult status for its extreme imagery, ecological panic themes, and relentlessly lurid promotional campaign. Japanese posters for imported horror and exploitation titles from this period are often among the boldest and most visually aggressive of all theatrical paper, and this example is a particularly memorable survivor.

The Poster & Artwork

The design is dominated by a huge, hand-painted serpent lunging diagonally across the composition, its jaws thrown wide to reveal dripping fangs and a vivid crimson throat. Around this central image, the layout erupts into a dense collage of scenes from the film: victims overwhelmed by writhing snakes, bodies under attack, flames consuming interiors, and panic rendered at full intensity.

The result is exactly what one would hope for from a period Japanese horror poster: graphic, theatrical, and unapologetically sensational. It is a superb piece of display art in its own right, with the kind of visual excess that has made 1980s Japanese genre posters so sought-after among collectors.

Particularly striking are the poster’s violent contrasts of red, green, black, and flesh tones, together with the oversized title typography. The colossal red (“snake”) character at the upper right anchors the entire sheet, while the green vertical copy at left amplifies the film’s shock marketing with characteristic 1980s grindhouse bravado.

Historical Context

Released in Japan in 1983, this poster represents the original Japanese theatrical campaign for a film that quickly became notorious well beyond Taiwan. Calamity of Snakes belongs to the wave of regional eco-horror and creature-feature cinema that transformed real-world environmental anxieties into lurid popular entertainment. In this case, the result is one of the most extreme and unforgettable snake-horror films ever released.

Japanese release material for imported cult exploitation titles was often produced in relatively modest quantities compared with mainstream studio fare, and examples that survive in strong condition are increasingly difficult to locate. For collectors of Asian cult cinema, horror ephemera, and Japanese poster design, this is a highly desirable and visually arresting piece.

Typography & Release Details

The poster carries a number of memorable period promotional lines, including the dramatic green vertical copy promising mass reptilian carnage, and the yellow angled banner proclaiming the film’s shocking notoriety. At lower right, the English-language title “Calamity of Snakes” appears above the カラー作品 designation, with distribution credited to ジョイパックフィルム配給 (Joy Pack Film Distribution).

These details are important, as they firmly place the poster within the aesthetics of early-1980s Japanese imported-genre marketing—an area that has become increasingly appreciated by collectors.

It is especially appealing because the design fully delivers on the film’s reputation: chaotic, grotesque, and impossible to ignore.

Condition

Excellent condition. A highly attractive original unrestored example with strong colour, clean presentation, and excellent overall display appeal. As expected for an original theatrical poster of this age, there may be light, ordinary signs of handling or storage, but overall it presents extremely well.
