“The Man Who Wasn’t There" (バーバー), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2002 (film 2001), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O817

Sale price $125.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese theatrical release of Joel & Ethan Coen’s The Man Who Wasn’t There (released in Japan as バーバー). This Japanese theatrical release opened in Japan on 27 April 2002.

Directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen and starring Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand, James Gandolfini, and Scarlett Johansson, the film is a razor-sharp, deadpan neo-noir set in 1949 Santa Rosa, Northern California, where a quiet barber’s small act of blackmail spirals into an unexpected nightmare.

Poster design
A superb, minimalist Japanese design built around a sepia-toned barbershop interior still, anchored by a bold vertical tagline 「人生はクソッ素晴らしい」 (“Life is damn wonderful”). The title バーバー is rendered in clean, brush-like typography across the lower field, accompanied by award call-outs including Best Director at Cannes (2001) and an Academy Award cinematography nomination (2002)—all creating an elegant, gallery-ready piece with strong negative space and superb balance.

It is over 23 years old!
