“Escape from L.A.” / 「エスケープ・フロム L.A.」, Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1996, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA943
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1996 for the first Japanese release of Escape from L.A. / 「エスケープ・フロム L.A.」, John Carpenter’s dystopian sci-fi action sequel to Escape from New York.
A classic piece of 1990s genre cinema advertising, this Japanese poster presents the film with a dramatic, fire-saturated design, perfectly suited to its apocalyptic Los Angeles setting and cult anti-hero mythology.
Film background
Set in a dystopian 2013, Escape from L.A. imagines Los Angeles severed from the mainland after a catastrophic earthquake and transformed into a penal quarantine zone for political dissidents, criminals, and social outcasts. When a stolen doomsday device enters the city, the government forces Snake Plissken into another impossible mission.
Directed by John Carpenter, with screenplay by John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, and Debra Hill, the film stars Kurt Russell, Steve Buscemi, Peter Fonda, Georges Corraface, and Stacy Keach. Though divisive on release, it has since gained strong cult status for its satire, bold visual style, and continuation of the Snake Plissken legend.
Poster design
The Japanese poster is dominated by a fierce orange-red apocalyptic palette. The upper half features the film’s central anti-hero figure in close-up, wearing the character’s signature eyepatch and aiming a revolver directly outward. Flames, smoke, and heat distortion flood the composition, giving the sheet an intense disaster-movie quality.
The lower section shows a devastated Los Angeles cityscape, viewed from above and consumed by smoke and fire. Silhouetted palm trees along the left edge sharpen the specifically Californian setting.
The large vertical white tagline reads:
「2013年、誰も知らないL.A.がそこにある…」
“In 2013, an L.A. no one knows exists…”
The Japanese title 「エスケープ・フロム L.A.」 is stacked at centre-right in bold white and orange lettering, giving the poster strong 1990s action-film impact.
