"World Apartment Horror" (ワールド・アパートメント・ホラー), Original Japanese Theatrical Poster, 1991
Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo | B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm)
This is the original 1991 Japanese B2 poster for World Apartment Horror, a unique and genre-defying film directed by legendary manga artist and Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo, based on a story by Satoshi Kon. Fusing horror, satire, and social commentary, the film explores xenophobia, possession, and cultural tension through the story of a yakuza thug who encounters supernatural forces in a Tokyo apartment block inhabited by foreign workers.
The poster's design is instantly arresting—a menacing, red-saturated close-up of the possessed protagonist, his expression twisted into a snarling grin, oozes claustrophobic dread and chaos. The rough texture and sweat-streaked shadows suggest something more psychological than gory, reflecting the film’s surreal, unnerving tone. The vertical Japanese typography balances the intense imagery, while the stark English title at the bottom—“WORLD APARTMENT HORROR”—adds an international edge.
While World Apartment Horror has remained a cult title due to its limited release and genre-blurring themes, it is notable for being one of the only live-action films directed by Otomo and for its early collaboration with Satoshi Kon, who co-wrote the screenplay.
Highly sought after among Otomo collectors and fans of Japanese alternative cinema, this poster is an excellent representation of Japan’s early 1990s experimental film scene.
