"Tomorrow’s Joe" (Ashita no Joe), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1970, B0 2-Sheet Size (38.5 × 62 in / ≈ 98 × 158 cm)
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1970 for the first theatrical release of Tomorrow’s Joe (あしたのジョー).
Tomorrow’s Joe is the live-action adaptation of Tetsuya Chiba and Asao Takamori’s seminal boxing manga. Directed by Yasuharu Hasebe (長谷部安春) and released nationwide by Daiei on 22 July 1970, the film stars Shōji Ishibashi as scrappy orphan-turned-pugilist Joe Yabuki, Seiichirō Kameishi as aristocratic rival Tōru Rikiishi, and veteran actor Ryūtaro Tatsumi as cantankerous trainer Danpei Tange.
Plot overview
After drifting into Tokyo’s Doya-gai slums and thrashing a local gang, feisty Joe Yabuki catches the eye—and fists—of ex-pro boxer Danpei. Seeing championship potential behind Joe’s street-brawling bravado, Danpei trains him in the Sweet Science. Joe’s meteoric rise through Japan’s lightweight ranks is fuelled by a white-hot rivalry with elite boxer Rikiishi, culminating in a brutal title showdown that tests loyalty, pride, and the price of glory. Faithful to the manga’s first major arc, the film balances gritty ring action with animation cameos that honour the original artwork, a highlight reflected on this hybrid illustrated-and-photo poster.
At over 54 years old, this rare oversized B0 two-sheet remains a knockout display piece—especially prized for combining live-action portraits with classic anime renderings of Joe and his cohorts.
