"Goldfinger", Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1971, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) M39A
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1971 for a Japanese theatrical re-release of Goldfinger, the landmark 1964 James Bond film starring Sean Connery as 007. Directed by Guy Hamilton, and co-starring Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, and Shirley Eaton, Goldfinger is widely regarded as one of the defining entries in the Bond series—the film that cemented the franchise’s global identity and established many of its most enduring visual and narrative conventions.
Film background
Released in 1964, Goldfinger was the third James Bond film and arguably the picture that transformed 007 into a worldwide phenomenon. With its unforgettable villain, razor-sharp wit, high-style gadgetry, Aston Martin DB5, and Shirley Bassey’s iconic title song, it remains one of the most beloved and influential Bond films ever made. This Japanese poster was produced for a 1971 revival release, at a moment when the Bond franchise was already firmly embedded in international popular culture.
Poster design
This is an especially striking Japanese re-release design, far removed from the more familiar first-release campaign materials. The composition is boldly graphic and distinctly early-1970s in feeling, combining pop-art typography with instantly recognisable Bond imagery.
The background is dominated by the repeated word GOLDFINGER in huge, pale blue block lettering, creating a rhythmic, almost Op Art field. At centre sits a vivid orange gun-barrel target motif, inside which appears a sharply rendered portrait of Sean Connery holding a silenced pistol. Above, suspended against a black field, is the unforgettable image of the gold-painted body of Jill Masterson, one of the most iconic visual motifs in Bond history. Also incorporated into the central montage are the Aston Martin DB5 and another car vignette, reinforcing the film’s high-speed, gadget-laden glamour.
At the bottom, the title is set in a black panel with the classic yellow 007 gun logo and the Japanese title 「ゴールドフィンガー」, giving the poster a powerful finishing anchor. Running along the lower margin is a promotional line announcing Connery’s return as Bond and celebrating the scale, gadgetry, and entertainment of the film’s Japanese revival release.
Collectibility
Japanese James Bond posters are highly sought after, and this example is particularly appealing because it does not simply recycle the standard international campaign art. Instead, it offers a highly stylised Japan-only re-release design, making it a standout piece for collectors of Bond memorabilia, Sean Connery material, and 1960s–70s Japanese graphic design.
