“Goodbye Uncle Tom” (Addio Zio Tom), Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 1971, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA1088
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1971 for the Japanese release of Goodbye Uncle Tom, the notorious Italian mondo docudrama directed by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi. Distributed in Japan by Towa, the film has long occupied a singular place in exploitation and documentary history: deeply controversial, confrontational, and still debated for its attempt to depict the brutality of slavery through staged pseudo-documentary reconstruction.
Film background
Presented as a journey back into the American South, Goodbye Uncle Tom uses the language of documentary while staging large-scale scenes of historical atrocity. The directors framed it as an indictment of slavery; many critics, however, regarded it as one of the most provocative and troubling “shockumentary” works ever made. Whatever one’s view of the film itself, it remains a major cult title of 1971 and an important object of study within mondo cinema, exploitation film, and the history of controversial European genre filmmaking.
Poster design
This is an exceptionally striking Japanese design, and far more visually sophisticated than many posters produced for comparable exploitation titles. The sheet is dominated by a bold photographic image, credited on the poster to Ruiko Yoshida, set against a rich blue ground. The composition is severe, elegant, and deliberately confrontational, with the stark central figure balanced by clean typography and restrained use of white and black. It has a strong early-1970s graphic sensibility and remarkable wall presence.
For collectors, that is a large part of its appeal. Even aside from the film’s notoriety, this is a memorable Japanese poster in its own right: stylish, uncompromising, and unmistakably of its period. Japanese posters for controversial imported cult films of this kind are not common, and this particular photographic design is especially desirable.
