This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1984 for the first Japanese release of Gremlins, Joe Dante’s hugely influential horror-comedy, produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday, and Frances Lee McCain. Released in the United States in 1984 and in Japan later that same year, Gremlins became one of the defining genre films of the decade—combining black comedy, creature-feature chaos, and Christmas-season menace in a way that proved both commercially and culturally enduring.
Film background
Directed by Joe Dante and written by Chris Columbus, Gremlins tells the story of Billy Peltzer and the mysterious Mogwai, Gizmo, whose three deceptively simple care rules lead to one of cinema’s most memorable outbreaks of anarchic creature mayhem. The film occupies an important place in 1980s popular culture, bridging family entertainment and darker genre filmmaking, and helped define the Amblin / Spielberg style of blockbuster fantasy-horror in the period.
Japan received the film as a year-end event picture, with its release timed to the winter season—an especially apt fit given the film’s snowy Christmas setting in Kingston Falls. That seasonal context adds further appeal to original Japanese first-release material for the title.
Poster design
This is the classic and highly recognisable John Alvin campaign image, adapted for the Japanese theatrical market. Alvin’s design is one of the most effective pieces of 1980s poster art: a pair of hands carefully presenting a glowing gift box, with Gizmo’s small furry paws and his watchful eyes just visible beneath the lid. The composition brilliantly withholds full revelation, heightening the sense of mystery and mischief.
The Japanese layout frames the image within a bold dark blue border, giving the poster a particularly elegant and dramatic presence. Across the top, the large red slogan reads:
「スピルバーグからの最高の贈り物」
“The greatest gift from Spielberg.”
Near the centre, the vertical white copy reads:
「かわいくて
頭が良くて
いたずら好き
そして知的で
危険。」
Which translates as:
“Cute, smart, mischievous, intelligent, and dangerous.”
This is especially effective copy, as it hints at the film’s tonal duality—adorable on the surface, but increasingly threatening underneath. At the bottom, the large mint-blue Japanese title 「グレムリン」 is set above the billing block, with Steven Spielberg’s presenting credit prominently included.
Collectibility
Original first-release Japanese posters for Gremlins are highly collectible, particularly in strong condition. The film remains one of the great 1980s crossover titles, appealing equally to collectors of Amblin / Spielberg material, horror posters, creature-feature memorabilia, and classic John Alvin poster art. The Japanese first-release design is particularly attractive for its crisp border treatment and bold typography, while still preserving the iconic core artwork that made the campaign famous worldwide.
