“Hannibal” (ハンニバル), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2001, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA337
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2000/2001 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Hannibal, Ridley Scott’s 2001 adaptation of Thomas Harris’s novel and direct sequel to The Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins returns as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, with Julianne Moore stepping into the role of Clarice Starling. The film was released in Japan on April 7, 2001 by Gaga Communications / Humax.
Film background
Ten years after the Buffalo Bill case, the disgraced but still brilliant Clarice Starling becomes embroiled in a botched drug raid that leaves her a scapegoat within the FBI. Meanwhile, Lecter lives in Florence under an assumed identity, only to be drawn out of hiding by a vengeful mutilated millionaire and an obsessed Italian police inspector. Mixing Gothic horror, grotesque set‑pieces and twisted romance, Hannibal pushes the character into more operatic, controversial territory than its predecessor.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 is dominated by a single, unnerving close‑up of Lecter’s face emerging from velvety blackness. Only his right eye is fully visible—and it glows a demonic red, the solitary point of colour in an otherwise sepia‑toned visage cracked with faint scars and shadows. A short Japanese tagline sits dead centre across the darkness, while the English title “HANNIBAL” appears small near the bottom, dwarfed by the bold red katakana 「ハンニバル」 below. It’s a chillingly simple composition that trades on Hopkins’s now‑iconic visage to sell the film.
