“If….” (もしも….), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1969 (film 1968), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P203

Sale price $125.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1969 for the Japanese release of If…. (もしも….), the landmark British film directed by Lindsay Anderson and starring Malcolm McDowell in his breakout role as the rebellious student Mick Travis. A defining work of late-1960s cinema, the film famously won the Palme d’Or at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival.

Film background
Released in 1968, *If…. * is a surreal, anarchic, and fiercely satirical portrait of life inside a traditional British boys’ boarding school—where discipline, ritual, and hypocrisy curdle into rage. The story builds toward a violent uprising, blending realism with dream logic and abrupt tonal shifts. It remains one of the most influential British films ever made and the beginning of Anderson and McDowell’s celebrated collaborations.

Poster design
A superb Japanese design that mirrors the film’s fractured style: bold, graphic Japanese typography もしも…. sits above a collage of colour and monochrome imagery—McDowell’s intense gaze, school ceremony, riot smoke, and vignettes of rebellion. The layout reads like a visual manifesto: controlled institutions cracking under pressure. In B2 format, it’s an exceptionally displayable piece of late-’60s political cinema paper.

Condition
Very Good. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale.
Note: pinholes from previous cinema display are present (visible near the corners/edges). These are typical for original theatre-used posters and do not detract from the strong overall presentation—especially once framed. We have taken the condition into account when pricing this poster.
