“Jane Eyre” / 「ジェーン・エア」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1971, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) B286

Sale price $115.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1971 Japanese release of Jane Eyre / 「ジェーン・エア」, Delbert Mann’s acclaimed 1970 adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s classic Gothic novel, starring Susannah York and George C. Scott.

Combining brooding romance, psychological drama, and the haunting atmosphere of Thornfield Hall, this adaptation is celebrated for its mature performances, elegant cinematography, and evocative score by John Williams.

Film background

Orphaned at a young age, Jane Eyre endures a severe childhood before becoming governess to a young girl at the isolated Thornfield Hall.

There, she meets the estate’s imposing and enigmatic master, Edward Rochester. Despite the differences in their position and temperament, the two develop a profound emotional connection.

Their hope of happiness is shattered on their wedding day when a long-concealed secret within Thornfield Hall is finally revealed, forcing Jane to choose between love, dignity, and independence.

Directed by Delbert Mann, the screenplay was written by Jack Pulman, based on the 1847 novel by Charlotte Brontë. The film stars Susannah York, George C. Scott, Ian Bannen, Jack Hawkins, Nyree Dawn Porter, and Rachel Kempson.

Originally produced for American television, the film’s cinematic quality led to international theatrical distribution. Susannah York and George C. Scott were widely praised for bringing restraint, emotional intensity, and adult complexity to the familiar literary characters.

Poster design

The poster uses an elegant and deeply melancholic composition dominated by warm amber, rust-red, and autumnal brown tones.

The upper section features an immense profile portrait of Susannah York as Jane Eyre, looking downward while pressing her hand toward her lips. Her expression suggests anxiety, contemplation, and suppressed longing, perfectly conveying the emotional conflict at the centre of the story.

Behind her, bare branches stretch across a glowing red-orange sky, adding a sense of isolation and foreboding.

Along the lower edge appears the dark silhouette of Thornfield Hall, rendered as a vast Gothic fortress beneath the fading light. The building’s heavy stone architecture contrasts with Jane’s pale, delicate portrait above it and reinforces the mystery concealed within the estate.

The vertical text at upper left reads:

「きらめくカラーに彩られた
《永遠の愛のバイブル》が
再びあなたの頬に美しい涙を――」

“Adorned in shimmering colour, the ‘Bible of Eternal Love’ once again brings beautiful tears to your cheeks—”

The descriptive text at lower right reads:

「ソーンフィールドの古城を照らす
哀しげな夕陽に愛を信じ、幸せを祈る時
薄幸の道を歩むジェーンの足もとに
いま、ヒースの花がやさしく咲きみだれる」

“As she believes in love and prays for happiness beneath the sorrowful sunset illuminating the ancient castle of Thornfield, heath flowers gently bloom at the feet of Jane as she walks her path of misfortune.”

The Japanese title:

「ジェーン・エア」

appears across the lower centre in large olive-green lettering, integrated into the dark landscape.

The lower-right billing block identifies the principal cast, director Delbert Mann, novelist Charlotte Brontë, and the Japanese distributor Nippon Herald Films.
