“Jaws” (ジョーズ), Original First-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1975, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E170
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1975 for the first Japanese release of Jaws (ジョーズ), Steven Spielberg’s era-defining thriller that didn’t just terrify audiences—it permanently rewired modern cinema. Few images in film history are as instantly recognisable as this one: a lone swimmer above, and the impossible shape rising from the deep.
Film background
Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley’s novel, Jaws is the ultimate masterclass in suspense—built on pacing, suggestion, and the terror of what you can’t quite see. Set in the seaside town of Amity, it follows Police Chief Brody, marine biologist Hooper, and shark hunter Quint as they head out to stop a predator that has turned summer into a nightmare.
It became a global phenomenon and remains one of the most influential films ever made—arguably the blueprint for the modern blockbuster.
Poster design
A perfect example of cinema marketing as graphic art. The composition is brutally simple and utterly effective: the clean white title field, the calm blue waterline, and then the shark—massive, mouth open, rising straight toward the viewer like a nightmare emerging from silence. The bold red JAWS title and the Japanese ジョーズ beneath it create an instantly readable, high-contrast design that looks extraordinary framed.
Japanese B2s for major international titles often have their own typography and layout nuance, and this one is as clean and iconic as it gets—minimal, graphic, and timeless.
Rarity and condition
Japanese first-release B2s for blockbuster titles were displayed heavily and discarded, making high-grade survivors increasingly hard to source. This example is in excellent condition with minor edge wear, which we have taken into consideration when pricing. Importantly, once framed it will display very well, with strong colour, clean borders overall, and exceptional wall impact.
Condition
Excellent. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale.
