“Jeans Blues: No Future” (ジーンズブルース 明日なき無頼派), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1974, STB Tatekan Size (51 × 145 cm) ZA1189
This is an original Japanese STB / tatekan theatrical poster printed in 1974 for the first-release campaign of Jeans Blues: No Future (ジーンズブルース 明日なき無頼派). Directed by Sadao Nakajima for Toei, the film stars Meiko Kaji and Tsunehiko Watase in a hard-edged 1970s action-crime drama combining road-movie fatalism, youth rebellion, and Toei’s distinctive genre intensity.
Film background
Released in 1974, Jeans Blues: No Future belongs to the explosive world of early-1970s Japanese action cinema, a period defined by outlaw protagonists, doomed romance, violent confrontation, and highly stylised studio marketing. The film pairs Meiko Kaji, one of the defining screen presences of Japanese genre cinema, with Tsunehiko Watase, whose intense physicality made him a natural fit for Toei’s crime and action productions of the decade.
The Japanese subtitle 明日なき無頼派 can be understood as “outlaws without tomorrow,” perfectly capturing the film’s fatalistic tone.
Poster design
A superb and extremely striking STB tatekan design, using the tall two-panel format to dramatic effect. The upper section is printed in a distinctive pinkish-purple monochrome, showing Meiko Kaji in a trench coat beside Tsunehiko Watase, who aims a weapon directly outward. A bold red vertical slogan cuts through the right side, adding to the poster’s sense of danger and imminent violence.
The lower half shifts into a darker, high-contrast action montage. The title 明日なき無頼派 appears in jagged bright yellow calligraphy, while ジーンズブルース is set vertically inside a vivid blue block. Watase appears again in a flat cap, smoking, while Meiko Kaji’s face is shown in close-up at lower right, staring down the sights of a gun. Small monochrome stills of police figures appear at lower left, reinforcing the film’s crime-drama atmosphere.
The overall design is pure 1970s Toei: violent, graphic, stylish, and emotionally fatalistic, with Kaji’s presence giving the poster particular collector appeal.
About STB / Tatekan posters
STBs / tatekans are tall Japanese cinema signboard posters, typically measuring around 51 × 145 cm, and usually formed from two stacked B2 sheets. They were designed for theatre-front display and high-impact visibility, not long-term preservation. As a result, original STBs are far scarcer than standard B2 posters, especially for 1970s action and exploitation titles.
