“La Strada” (道), Original Re-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1965, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) N219A

Sale price $425.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical re-release poster printed in 1965 for Federico Fellini’s La Strada (道), one of the defining masterpieces of post-war Italian cinema. Directed by Federico Fellini, the film stars Giulietta Masina, Anthony Quinn, and Richard Basehart, with music by Nino Rota.

Film background
Originally released in 1954, La Strada is one of Fellini’s most celebrated works and a central film in the development of international art cinema. The story follows Gelsomina, a gentle and fragile young woman sold to the brutish travelling strongman Zampanò, as they journey through a harsh rural landscape of poverty, performance, cruelty, and spiritual longing.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as major international honours including the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. It remains one of Fellini’s most emotionally direct and enduring films, with Nino Rota’s “Gelsomina” theme becoming inseparable from the film’s melancholy power.

Poster design
A beautifully restrained Japanese re-release design, using negative space, muted colour, and poetic typography to convey the film’s emotional gravity. The lower half shows Zampanò and Gelsomina walking together along a bleak, snow-lined road, dwarfed by the surrounding landscape. The image perfectly captures the film’s themes of wandering, hardship, and tragic human connection.

The Japanese title — “The Road” — is rendered in a large dark-teal brushstroke across the lower section, paired elegantly with the English title LA STRADA. Above, the vertical red Japanese copy reads like a poem: “This road goes on forever, a road of wandering… a road of sadness, seeking love and losing love…” Additional text references the famous melody “Gelsomina”, describing the film as an immortal masterpiece that celebrates eternal love and evokes profound emotion.

The left-side accolade block highlights the film’s major international awards and recommendations, including the Academy Award, Venice Film Festival Silver Lion, New York Film Critics Circle recognition, and Japanese Ministry of Education selection.

Rarity and significance
Original Japanese posters for Fellini’s major works are increasingly sought after, particularly re-release designs with such refined visual treatment. This 1965 Japanese B2 is especially appealing for its quiet, art-house sensibility: rather than relying on star portraiture or dramatic montage, it presents La Strada as a poetic, timeless work of cinema.

For collectors of Federico Fellini, Italian cinema, post-war art film, and Japanese foreign-film poster design, this is a particularly elegant and historically meaningful piece.
